FAQSIn The Classroom

Hi Members,
I think we are off to a good start. We were able to hear each others questions this time and share information. How exciting .... I don’t know about you but I went home, having learned something. I hope you did too.

If any of you have a piece of news you’d like to share in the newsletter please send me the information no later then the third Saturday of the month. For instance this last month I became a “Great Grandmother.”

Lee also had news to share. He is starting his own business of AtomMac Experiments with Video computers, Music Graphics and Photo Windows. It will be interesting to see what he has to show us.

I'm sure there are more questions I could ask but at this time can not think of what to ask you so I will leave it up to you and hopefully some of you will get back to me and let me know your interest.. Thank you Bobbie

Hints and Tips for OS X

Create Your Own OS X Screensaver

Although OS X provides a selection of gorgeous scenery for its built-in screensavers, you'll probably get bored with the beach, forest and cosmos images rather quickly. It's good news, then, that Apple allows you to create a custom screensaver with your very own pictures.

• Go to the Finder and select Home from the Go menu.
• Open the Pictures folder, and then select New Folder from the File menu. Call this    folder something descriptive--Screensaver Images, for example--and drag your    favorite photos into that folder.
• Now select System Preferences from the Apple menu, and click on the Screensaver    module.
• Click on the Screensavers tab at the top, and then click Slide Show in the column to    the left.
• Now, click the Configure button below the preview window.
This allows you to select the image folder of your choice. By default, it's set to the    Picture folder.
• Simply select your Screensaver Images folder instead, and click Open.

The next time your activate your screensaver, it will choose images at random from your Screensaver Images folder, and then slowly fade one image into another. It's a great way to add your personal touch to OS X!

A Hint on your Email message list in your mail folder:

From Subject Date Received.

To rearrange (sort) the list according to the column heading, just click the heading at the top of a column in your email message list.

The column heading that is blue is the one that items are currently arranged by. For instance, if you like to keep your emails organized by dates received, with the newest email at the top of the list. But sometimes you may want to fined an old email from a particular person, you can click the “From” column to alphabetize the names; then you can quickly skim through the collection of email from each person.

You can manually mark an email that you’ve already read as “unread.” You can use this as a reminder to go back and read a message more carefully, or to make a message stand out in the list: Select a message or multiple messages, then form the message menu, select “Marked As Unread.” You’ll get your blue button back just as if you had never opened the email.

OS 9:

A Hint and Tip for those who have Mac O9

Window Shading

Mac OS 9 allows you to collapse any window to its title bar by clicking the small rectangle in the top right. This allows you to view the contents behind the window without having to actually close the window or move it offside. Fans of this features can simplify its activation by opening the Appearance control panel, clicking the Options tab, and checking off the second option which allows you to collapse any window by double-clicking its title bar.

Mac OS 9 Finder Shortcuts

The Finder is chock full of shortcuts. Hold down the option key as you double-click a folder. This automatically closes the previous folder window as the new one opens. For a quick clean-up, hold down the option key as you close a window. This action automatically closes all open windows. You can also hold down the command key and click on the title of any window. This brings up a hierarchical location listing, allowing you to quickly select any higher-level folder.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=26192

The Apple Support Webmasters have compiled the following list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) with detailed answers to assist you if you are not familiar with downloading software from the World Wide Web.

Your Questions This Month and My Answers:

1. Q. How do I delete my old email addresses?

A. To Delete an address, go to the top menu while you are in your mail program were it says “Window.” Scroll down and select the address book. Select the name you want to remove. Then highlight it and hit delete. It will ask you if you are sure you want to delete it. Just hit yes and poof it is gone.

2. Q. How do I put things into new folders in my mail program?

A
. When you have your mail program opened, the Mailbox drawer slides out from the side of the Viewer Window. The drawer might slide out from either side of the Viewer Window, depending on how much screen space is available to the left or right. Once the drawer is opened, high light the “IN” box to make a new folder. Then go up to the menu bar to Mailbox. Go down the list to “New Mailbox” and click it on.

Fill in the blank with the name of the person you want to put in. Should you want to have a mailbox inside of a mailbox, just high light the persons name and do the same steps of going under the mailbox in the menu bar and type in what you want it to say. Some times you may have a mailbox from a friend and they sent something special you want to save, you can make a folder under their name and name the folder “Save.” I’ve even made a fold that said, “Read Later” under that persons name.

3.
Q. I would like to know about backing up my work.

A. It is wise to always back up your work. There is no worse feeling when working with your files and you have put hours into your work and then you loose it...There are many ways to back up your work..You would need to have a Zip, Jaz, Firewire or a burner and copy your work onto the disk or CD's.)
As far as a Zip Drive or Jazz drive goes they wouldn't be the cheapest way to save anything. Compared to CD's, Zip disks and Jaz disks cost to much to buy now-a-days and using them for storage is really getting to be an outdated method, especially when you can only save 100 MB on a Zip disk. It would take 6 Zip disks alone to save what you can save by copying to a single CD.
Blank CD's, that can hold in excess of 700MB, cost next to nothing now-a-days and take up much less space to store after you have recorded on them.
The best bet I should think would be to save your files to a CD. You can even compress the files before saving them to the CD by creating an archive of the data.. However to be able to save to CD's your computer will need to have a RW drive...
Archives can be created in Panther easily... All it takes to do so is to hold down the CONTROL key as one clicks on a folder or file and in the contextual menu that pops up you have a choice you can select that Creates an Archive of xxxxxx".. This makes a .zip file of the data selected of a size about half of what the original was...
A Firewire drive would be a good choice too but not all older computer have Firewire capabilities.. . Using a program like toast may be the only way to save to a CD with these computers...

4. Q. Do the MAC users boot up every day?

A. That depends on the person. Not all macintoshes are shut down daily... many leave them on for prolonged periods of time, sometimes weeks and sometimes month.... I can only tell you what I do myself... .There have been a few times I have forgotten to shut down and it was left in the sleep mode all night. I feel it is better to shut down because of a power outage, it could damage your computer.

5. Q. Do they use the sleep mode except for longer periods of down time?

A. I only use the sleep mode when I know I am going to be out of the room for a half our or longer.

6. Q. How do I know what system I am using?

A.
Take your mouse and click it onto an open space on your desktop. Then go up into the far left corner at the top and go under the blue Apple to “About this Mac” it will tell you what version you are using. You should always know what version you use because that is one of the first questions that you will be asked if you need help with your Mac.

If you want to learn how to make a computer work, get a PC. If you want to get more work done on your computer, get a Mac.

Backing up Address Book

You can create a backup copy of your address book, so you can easily recover your original information if you make inadvertent changes.

Before you make extensive changes to your address book, such as importing new addresses or reorganizing groups, choose Backup DB from the File menu.

If you want to undo all of your changes, choose Revert to Backup DB from the File menu. Any new cards or information you've changed since you last created a backup will be lost. Any deleted items will be recovered.

To save a copy of your address book for safekeeping, copy the Address Book file to another location (such as an external hard disk or a CD). The Address Book file is located in your Library folder, inside the Application Support folder (~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook).
Keeping track of birthdays

You can use Address Book to remember your friends' birthdays.

Find a person in Address Book, then choose Add Field from the Card menu. Choose Birthday from the submenu, then enter the person's birth date.

Mac users swear by their computer, Windows users swear at their computers

Life Before Computers

An application was for employment
A program was a TV show
A cursor used profanity
A keyboard was a piano!

Memory was something that you lost with age
A CD was a bank account
And if you had a 3 1/2 inch floppy
You hoped nobody found out!

Compress was something you did to garbage
Not something you did to a file
And if you unzipped anything in public
You'd be in jail for a while!

Log on was adding wood to a fire
Hard drive was a long trip on the road
A mouse pad was where a mouse lived
And a backup happened to your commode!
Cut - you did with a pocket knife
Paste you did with glue
A web was a spider's home

And a virus was the flu!
I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper
And the memory in my head
I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead!
