• Bobbie’s Comments :

As each month passes the format of this newsletter will probably be changing... Until I am comfortable, with what I feel this newsletter should look like, I will be changing titles to fit the needs of this newsletter. I know what I have in mind but I need to learn the program first, and that, is going to take me a little time to work on. So please bear with me as I am learning right along with the rest of you about getting this Mac Club up and running.

PANTHER
•OS X Panther:

Address Book
The system-wide Address Book enhances the power and usefulness of other apps in your system and other devices connected to it with flexible and functional contact management. And now it’s more powerful than ever in Panther. Each card can hold and attractively display and label all the information you want to keep, no matter how many phone numbers and email addresses a particular friend might have. There’s also a space for random notes — birthday, the dog’s name, etc. — and adding a picture is a simple matter of drag and drop.

But Address Book can do more than just display card contents; it also lets you actively use them. Click on an email address to send a message — if it happens to be a mac.com address, you can also open that person’s iDisk public folder or send an instant message via iChat. And if you’ve got a Bluetooth-equipped cell phone, Address Book can automatically sync with it, alert you when you’ve got an incoming call and display the Caller ID information.
Part of what makes Address Book so simple to use with apps like Mail and devices like cell phones is the ease with which you can create and populate groups you want to send mail to collectively or sync with exclusively. It’s as Mac-like as you’d expect, including the ability to add members to groups via drag and drop, and using groups with Mail once they’re created is as easy as typing the group name in a mail message address line and pressing Return. You can also look up contact information in LDAP directories and quickly address an e-mail message, make a call or start a chat.

Print labels Using the Address Book

Do you like to correspond by paper mail? Whether you want to send holiday greetings to friends and family or send a printed newsletter to clients, Address Book can help by printing all your labels for you. No need to export records to another application. Address Book prints directly onto dozens of supported Avery, Avery metric and Dymo label stocks. Here’s another new option: if you’re going to be away from your Mac and would like to take a printed copy of your contacts with you, Address Book makes it easy. Simply specify the info you’d like. Address Book does the rest.
No matter how big your own contact list, finding information is a snap, since search looks through everything on every card and not just the name field. And because Address Book is built on the industry standard vCard format for storing contact information, your friends can send you vCards, or even beam them from their Palm to your PowerBook. You can add them to your own list by just dropping them in — no typing required. Of course, sharing your own card with others is just as easy.

Icons Have Become Generic/Need to Rebuild Desktop?

This problem causes long-time Macintosh users a lot of frustration, because the first thing that they look for is the equivalent of rebuilding the desktop for OS X. There is no equivalent. Even more frustrating is that the way that you handle this under OS X 10.2 is completely different than the way that you handled it in OS X versions prior to 10.2.

Icons in OS X 10.2 Jaguar are maintained by Launch Services.

Unlike OS 9, the database used by OS X is rebuilt automatically whenever you log in as a user (which includes an automatic log-in if you have your machine set up for only one user). Because the Launch Services database is frequently, and automatically, rebuilt, it is much less likely under OS X that your application and document icons will lose track of their creator as they could under OS 8/9. Unfortunately, it can still happen.

The first thing to try is SubRosaSoft RebuildDesktopX:
http://subrosasoft.com/thestore/product_info.php?products_id=397
Usually that will fix it. SubRosaSoft RebuildDesktopX is free.

Mac OS 9.1 Tips and information

Mac OS 9.1 Update is designed to support today's Mac OS 9 customers and ease the transition for tomorrow's Mac OS X customers. The Mac OS 9.1 update delivers additional support for Multiple Users and iTools services, and Sherlock 2 has a new channel Entertainment, making it easy to find movie reviews or your favorite song.

The Mac OS X Public Beta and Mac OS 9.1 are not compatible. If you install Mac OS 9.1, the Classic environment in the Mac OS X Public Beta will no longer function.

HINT'S & TIPS
• Hint’s & Tips :

HAVASU MAC COMPUTER CLUB cannot be held responsible should you encounter unexpected problems when trying tips and hints..This is only advising you of the tips and hints that can be found online.

1. Do you want to know what something looks like that you are sending someone in an email? First email what it is you want to see to yourself. Then when the mail comes back, you will see what your email will look like when you send your mail to the one you intend it for. You can send pictures to yourself attachments or anything you chose
.
2. Whould you like to take a picture of something you see on line or even just working on your computer? Hit Apple, Shift and the number 4. Then hold down the mouse button and drag your cursor diagonally over the items you want in your picture. When you let up on the mouse button you will get a picture. You might want to select the desktop to save it to, so you can find your picture or text that you copied. It will save in Acrobat Reader format.

Quick Tips
• Be sure to update firmware before installing Mac OS X. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
for more info. If a firmware update fails, do NOT proceed with installing OS X

3. Lets say, you want to check out my Online Sites To Explore, but you do not like to have to sit there and wait for the page to come up. Go up to file and select New Window and copy and paste the next link into it and check out that one while your other window is coming up in the background. I had all the sites up at the same time as I was writing this newsletter to make sure you could do so too.

IN THE CLASSROOM
•In The Classroom

For those of you who may be like me and get an interesting email with long lists of addresses, and want to pass it onto your family or friends. STOP ... Did you enjoy having to scroll and scrool down the page to fine what was only to click on a link or a short joke or picture? Well, your friends and family do not enjoy it either. Take a moment and highlight all the names and addresses and delete them. Then go up into the subject section and erace the FW: Now it will look like you are sending it and not like ... here comes another foward...

Speeding Up With Keyboard Commands

Is your mouse hand getting a little tired from going in circles all day long? Or maybe you're a little slow with the trackpad on your new Powerbook. Wouldn't it be nice to use both of your hands in a reasonable matter? Well, you can!
Your Mac has the ability to do most of your normal tasks using only your keyboard. Learning your keyboard commands may take a little time at first, but you'll gain back that time and more later on. Touch typists will find this particularly easy to learn, but even hunt-and-peckers will find themselves faster on the keyboard then with the mouse surprisingly quickly.
If you take a look at the image of the file menu in the Finder, you'll see  to the right of the item "New Folder". If you hold down the Command key and press the letter N, the Finder will create a new folder in the selected window or, if there isn't a window currently selected, on the desktop. You'll find the same key combinations in most applications: one of the many things that Apple did right was to set standards for things like this right from the beginning. Some applications even let you create your own keystroke combinations.

A good way to learn the standard keystrokes is to use them whenever you see a keystroke alternative on a menu. Before you know it, your fingers will be typing them automatically.

JUST FOR FUN !
•Just For Fun !

*Life Before Computers

An application was for employment
A program was a TV show
A cursor used profanity
A keyboard was a piano!

Memory was something that you lost with age
A CD was a bank account
And if you had a 3 1/2 inch floppy
You hoped nobody found out!

Compress was something you did to garbage
Not something you did to a file
And if you unzipped anything in public
You'd be in jail for a while!

Log on was adding wood to a fire
Hard drive was a long trip on the road
A mouse pad was where a mouse lived
And a backup happened to your commode!

Cut - you did with a pocket knife
Paste you did with glue
A web was a spider's home
And a virus was the flu!

I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper
And the memory in my head
I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead!
