United Way Success By 6 has been operating successfully in Oswego County for 13 years. The initiative began at the United Way of Minneapolis Area in 1988 through a collaborative effort of the Mayor, the Chief Executive Office of Honeywell Corporation, The Superintendent of Schools and the Chief Professional Officer of United Way of Minneapolis Area. Over the next decade seeing the progress mad in Minneapolis, the communities around the county began to replicate what had begun there. The Success By 6 name and logo captured the essence of the problem, as well as the solution, and stuck.. Seeing the impact of those SB6 initiatives already in existence, in 1998, Bank of America announced one of the largest corporate grants in history: a five-year, $50 million grant to the United Way of America to grow the number of United Way Success By 6 initiatives. Through grants to state and local United Ways, this investment enhanced existing SB6 initiatives and cultivated the development of additional initiatives in those states where Bank of America operates. Local United Ways effectively leveraged these resources, increasing the amount Bank of America invested in SB6 initiatives by 630%! Today United Way Success By 6 is the the UWA/ SB6 national strategic direction today has three major components:
Strengthening the Nationwide Community Infrastructure: Further
strengthen the nationwide network of community and state coalitions to
mobilize - generate support, align resources, and influence systems - to
have a high impact on parents of young children, thereby increasing school
readiness. Equipping
Parents & Others for Action to Stimulate Early Learning: Implement a
nationwide campaign that informs and motivates parents, relatives, and
family friends to use research-based tips to stimulate early learning. Increasing
the Quality of Early Learning Opportunities Offered Out of Home: Create
the conditions necessary to make it easier to find, select and offer
higher quality early education programs. Due
to its reach, organizational capacity and ground forces, United Way is
uniquely positioned to make a difference in every child's readiness for
school. Through the Success By 6 initiative, UWA offers national direction
and a point of coordination, training and technical assistance for a
community-based network of 1400 local United Ways, which fund 43,000
social agencies and are connected to even more community partners for the
purpose of improving community conditions. largest
